I live in Utah and Ive been living in a rental house for 6 months and the carpets were cleaned when I moved in. My lease states that out of my 800 dollar deposit theres a 100 dollar "cleaning charge". but my landlord wants to take that and a 200$ carpet cleaning fee for a total of 300$. is this legal??? BTW the house is just as clean if not cleaner than when I moved in. Thanks for the help!!!

Yes he can. You can also contact your local housing authority for any help or to find out if you need to take them to small claims court. Also, many times it is in a lease you must shampoo the carpets before moving or else they will deduct it from the security deposit, even if the carpet is clean.

We have started a carpet cleaning business about a year ago and it is going so so. We are trying to figure out good ways to really get peoples and businesses attention. We already have a yellow page ad and a billboard. Our prices are the same if not lower than most. We have the big van and the fancy equipment so how do we really get going. We’ve been making enough to pay our business bills but would really like to see a profit. What are some good ideas? What would make you want to get your carpets cleaned. And how do we get apartment managers to really pay attention to what we have to offer? Thanks

For apartments: Contact your local property management association (if there is one for your region). Make an appointment with the managers, offer a free demonstration on a unit. Underbid the comps but make sure that you have the proper liability insurance in place. You might also want to get bonded (if you haven’t already). This goes a long way with apt. communities. Offer your services to residents at a discounted rate or offer a couple of cleanings as an early bird incentive.

Craigslist might be another avenue of advertisement.

You might also want to try to hook up with a local radio station to advertise your services or even do a direct mailer in something like a val-pak or send out coupons in the newspaper.

Husband and I have 5 more months on our lease before it expires. We cant wait to get outta here because the management has gotten so bad. Anyways to keep things short, I think I do a good job of keeping the apartment neat. We dont paint our walls, or have holes in them..but I have 2 small dogs who sometimes finds ways to get out of their crates while I’m away and has accidents. I now have more than several pee stains on my carpet which I tried to remove with the pet stain remover and although it eliminates odor, there’s still a stain. Should I hire a carpet cleaning service upon moving out? The management is known to rip off people’s money as best they could. Thanks
